CASE STUDY
Space Sustainability & Governance Through University-Industry ESG Knowledge Transfer

Specialising in sustainability, transparency, and space technologies, Callala contributes to the University of Manchester's academic curriculum through market-focussed guest lectures in two leading-edge courses: Conceptual Aerospace Systems Design (AERO31521) and Environmental Governance and Geographies of Outer Space (GEOG60982).
In Aerospace Systems Design, Callala delivers a lecture that brings sustainability principles to life for engineering students. The session reveals how sustainability manifests across different roles and priorities, while examining evolving reporting frameworks and introducing a comprehensive sustainability glossary - equipping students to critically evaluate aerospace sustainability with real-world context. Callala's involvement extends beyond the classroom, supporting the annual conceptual design tradeshow, providing valuable real-world perspectives on sustainable aerospace engineering.
For Space Governance, Callala offers an insight into the challenges of managing limited orbital resources. The lectures weave together concepts of space as a commons; historical parallels with terrestrial frontiers; and the crucial role of corporate disclosure in ensuring responsible utilisation of Earth's orbital zones - particularly in critical regions such as sun-synchronous Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Students gain invaluable understanding of how sustainability frameworks and independent verification can shape accountable behaviours among private space actors.
Through these engagements, Callala commits to nurturing the next generation of aerospace professionals and space governance experts. The practical industry insights enrich both courses, providing students with essential tools to critically evaluate and address the environmental, social and governance challenges and considerations of the space frontier, both in space and on earth for space.

Andrew delivered an expert interview for our Postgraduate Space and Sustainability module at the University of Manchester, bringing fresh perspectives and practical insights that really engaged the students and enriched their learning.

Andrew presented a fantastic introduction to ESG for our undergraduate Aerospace Engineering students, providing them with a new perspective and foundation to incorporate sustainability in all its forms into their conceptual engineering designs for different space missions. He also supported our annual conceptual design tradeshow, directly engaging with our student teams and stimulating lively discussion on the ESG credentials of their proposed mission solutions.
